Laminate Flooring Gauteng – Quality Floors, Expert Advice and Professional Installation
Choosing the right laminate flooring in Gauteng involves more than selecting a colour and comparing the price per square metre. The thickness of the board, locking system, water resistance, condition of the subfloor and quality of the installation can all affect how the finished floor performs.
At Laminate Floor World, we supply and install laminate flooring across Gauteng. Our experience comes from working with floors every day – from new installations to repairs, moisture inspections and replacing older laminate floors.
If you are starting your search, browse our main laminate flooring range and buying guide to compare products, specifications and flooring options.
We also import selected ranges directly and sell them to the end user. This allows us to offer quality laminate flooring at competitive prices while still providing professional advice and installation.
What Laminate Flooring Are Gauteng Customers Choosing?
Based on our larger laminate flooring sales, approximately 90% are now 12mm laminate flooring. While we still sell quality 8mm products, many customers choose 12mm once they compare the specifications, feel and overall cost of the installation.
We prefer installing good-quality 12mm laminate because the locking systems are generally stronger, the floor feels more solid underfoot and there is usually less noise when walking across it.
Our current 12mm ranges also offer 72-hour water resistance or more, depending on the product.
However, we do not recommend flooring based on thickness alone. Before suggesting a product, we normally ask where it will be installed, how the room will be used, whether there are children or pets in the home and how likely the area is to experience spills.
8mm vs 12mm Laminate Flooring – Is 12mm Worth It?
Price is one of the first things customers compare when choosing between 8mm and 12mm laminate flooring.
A quality 8mm AC4 V-groove laminate will typically sell for around R250 to R300 per m², depending on the range. By comparison, our Matteo 12mm laminate is a wide-plank, V-groove AC5 product currently priced at around R320 per m².
The difference becomes interesting when you calculate the complete area.
For example, if you compare an 8mm laminate at R300/m² with Matteo 12mm at R320/m² over 100m², the difference in flooring material is approximately R2,000.
For many customers, the stronger locking system, thicker board, more solid underfoot feel and higher specification make that additional cost worthwhile.
This does not mean every home automatically needs 12mm flooring. A good-quality 8mm AC4 laminate can still be an excellent option when the product and application are suitable.
Laminate Flooring Prices in Gauteng
When comparing laminate flooring prices in Gauteng, it is important to compare like with like.
A cheaper price per square metre does not necessarily represent better value if you are comparing different thicknesses, AC ratings, locking systems or water-resistance specifications.
The complete flooring budget may also include underlay, skirting, profiles, installation and subfloor preparation where required.

Quality Laminate Flooring at Affordable Prices
Our approach is simple: we want to offer good-quality flooring at prices that make sense for the customer.
Laminate Floor World directly imports selected ranges, including Floorpan Elite 12mm and Matteo. We also source established flooring brands such as Pergo and Classen through local South African suppliers.
Direct importing on selected products helps us reduce unnecessary steps between the manufacturer and the end user. At the same time, our relationships with local laminate flooring suppliers give customers access to a wider selection of brands, colours and specifications.
This gives us the flexibility to recommend flooring according to the application and budget instead of trying to sell every customer the same product.
Laminate Flooring Ranges We Regularly Recommend
There is no single laminate floor that is right for every home. Some of the ranges and brands we regularly work with include Floorpan Elite, Matteo, Pergo and Classen.
Our recommendation depends on where the floor will be installed and what the customer expects from it.
For example, when water resistance is an important consideration, one of the products we commonly suggest is Floorpan Elite 12mm. It offers one-week water resistance, and its standard-size board format provides a rigid feel compared with some longer and wider laminate planks.
Matteo is another popular option for customers looking for a 12mm AC5 wide-plank laminate at an affordable price.
Pergo and Classen give us additional options for customers looking for different designs, specifications and finishes.
Water-Resistant Laminate Flooring Is Not a Waterproof Floor
This is one of the most important distinctions we explain to customers.
A laminate plank can have a water-resistant surface and locking system, but that does not make the complete installed floor waterproof.
Water can still enter underneath a floating floor through walls, doorways, leaking pipes, external paving, sliding doors and other parts of the building.
Once moisture becomes trapped underneath laminate flooring, the surface of the boards may initially look completely dry while the concrete underneath remains wet.
This is why we look at the complete installation rather than relying only on the water-resistance rating printed on the flooring box.
Our guide to laminate flooring water damage explains what we have found when uplifting floors after leaks and moisture-related call-outs.
Water Damage Is Common During Gauteng’s Rainy Season
Gauteng may have long dry periods, but moisture-related flooring problems become particularly noticeable during the rainy season.
Some of the problems we have encountered include leaking sliding doors, external paving that is higher than the internal subfloor and gutter downpipes discharging water too close to the building.
In these situations, the damaged laminate is sometimes only the visible symptom. Replacing the flooring without correcting the source of the moisture can result in the same problem returning.
Where persistent structural moisture is suspected, we advise the customer to consult an appropriate damp-proofing or waterproofing specialist. Our role is to assess the flooring and identify the signs we can see; we do not present ourselves as waterproofing specialists.
Why a Level Subfloor Matters for Laminate Flooring
A level subfloor is essential for a successful floating laminate installation, particularly with modern water-resistant locking systems.
One of the recurring problems we encounter is customers replacing an older laminate floor and assuming that the existing subfloor must already be level because laminate was previously installed there.
That assumption can be expensive.
Once the old flooring is removed, dips and uneven areas may become apparent. If new laminate is installed over these areas, the boards can move when walked on. This places repeated pressure on the locking system.
We therefore assess the subfloor and recommend screeding where it is required. Where screeding is necessary for the installation to meet the required standard and maintain the applicable installation guarantee, we insist that the subfloor is corrected before proceeding.
Uneven floors are also one of the problems we frequently find when investigating laminate flooring that creaks or moves underfoot.
For a detailed explanation of how we identify dips, prepare tiles and concrete, use bonding slurry and deal with customers who refuse preparation, read our guide to screeding for laminate flooring.
Older Gauteng Homes Often Need Additional Floor Preparation
Older homes across Johannesburg and other parts of Gauteng can present different challenges from newer developments.
Two existing floor coverings we regularly encounter are parquet flooring and slate tiles.
Where old parquet needs to be removed, the surface underneath normally requires preparation and a suitable self-levelling screed before the new laminate is installed.
Slate presents a different challenge because the surface is often uneven. Depending on the condition and stability of the existing tiles, we may prepare and screed over the slate to create a suitable surface for the new flooring.
The important point is that the finished surface needs to meet the requirements for the laminate flooring being installed. Simply covering an uneven existing floor does not correct the problem underneath.
Why Moisture Testing Matters After Screeding
A screeded floor can look dry without actually being dry throughout.
We experienced this on a Gauteng installation where the floor had been screeded and the customer wanted the laminate installed the following day. The screed looked dry and could be walked on, but our moisture meter indicated that moisture was still present underneath.
The customer nevertheless insisted on proceeding with the installation.
A few months later, a significant amount of moisture had accumulated underneath the laminate flooring.
Experiences like this are why we do not judge a newly prepared subfloor only by its appearance. The surface being dry to the touch does not necessarily mean that the material underneath is ready to be covered.
Professional Screeding Is About More Than Pouring Levelling Compound
Another issue we encounter is the incorrect application of screed.
Self-levelling products need to be prepared and applied correctly. The purpose is to create a suitable substrate for the flooring installation, not simply to cover visible imperfections.
There are also situations where screeding is needed but is omitted completely to reduce the installation cost.
We would rather identify the problem before installation than fit a new floor over an unsuitable surface and deal with movement, creaking or locking-system problems later.
Laminate Flooring Specials and End-of-Range Products
A flooring special can represent excellent value, including an end-of-range product, provided the customer understands what they are buying.
We regularly offer discounted and promotional flooring through our latest flooring offers.
When buying an end-of-range laminate, we recommend purchasing a few additional boxes and storing them safely.
This is particularly useful if a small section needs to be repaired several years later. Once a colour or range has been discontinued, finding an exact replacement can become difficult.
Therefore, customers should consider the quality and specification of the product as well as the promotional price.
2026 Laminate Flooring Design Trends in Gauteng
Flooring colours have changed considerably over the years.
From what we are currently seeing in our showrooms, light oak and natural oak designs are among the strongest sellers. These colours work well with a wide range of interior styles and can make rooms feel lighter and more open.
Herringbone flooring is also performing well as more customers look for a distinctive pattern rather than a traditional straight-plank layout.
Customers interested in current colours and styles can read our guide to the latest design trends in laminate flooring.
Choosing Laminate Flooring for Homes with Children and Pets
We do not recommend a laminate floor based only on a photograph or colour sample.
Before suggesting a product, we want to understand how the room will actually be used.
Some of the questions we ask include:
- Which room will the laminate flooring be installed in?
- How will the area be used every day?
- Are there children in the home?
- Are there pets?
- How likely are spills or liquids in the area?
- What level of durability does the customer expect?
- What is the customer’s flooring budget?
The answers help us decide whether an 8mm or 12mm laminate is appropriate and which product specification makes the most sense.
This is also why visiting a flooring showroom can be useful. You can see the actual colours, compare board construction and discuss the application before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laminate Flooring in Gauteng
How much does quality laminate flooring cost in Gauteng?
Quality 8mm AC4 V-groove laminate flooring typically ranges from approximately R250 to R300 per m² in our current ranges. Some 12mm options are not much more expensive. For example, Matteo 12mm AC5 wide-plank laminate is currently around R320 per m². Prices can change, so always check the current product price before ordering.
Is 12mm laminate flooring better than 8mm?
Both can perform well when the product and installation are suitable. However, we generally prefer installing 12mm laminate because of its stronger locking system, more solid underfoot feel and reduced walking noise. Around 90% of our larger laminate flooring sales are currently 12mm products.
Is water-resistant laminate flooring waterproof?
No. Water-resistant laminate provides protection against surface spills according to the particular product specification, but it does not make the entire installed floor waterproof. Water can still enter underneath the floor from leaks, doors, walls, plumbing and external moisture sources.
Do you need to screed before installing laminate flooring?
Not every floor automatically needs screeding. However, if the subfloor is outside the required tolerance or contains problematic uneven areas, it needs to be corrected before installation. Installing laminate over an unsuitable surface can cause movement and place stress on the locking joints.
Can laminate flooring be installed over slate tiles?
It may be possible when the existing slate is stable and the surface can be correctly prepared. Because slate is often uneven, we may recommend suitable preparation and screeding over it before installing the laminate. The existing floor should be assessed first.
Can laminate flooring be installed over parquet?
Existing parquet needs to be assessed before a new floor is installed. In many older Gauteng homes where the parquet is being removed, we prepare the exposed surface and apply a suitable self-levelling screed before proceeding with the laminate installation.
Which laminate flooring colours are popular in Gauteng?
Light oak and natural oak colours are currently among our strongest sellers. Herringbone flooring is also attracting more interest from customers looking for a more distinctive design.
Is end-of-range laminate flooring worth buying?
Yes, a quality end-of-range laminate can offer excellent value. However, we recommend purchasing a few spare boxes at the same time. If the product is discontinued, those spare boards can be valuable if repairs are required in the future.
Choosing the Right Laminate Flooring in Gauteng
The best laminate floor is not necessarily the most expensive product or the thickest board.
We look at the complete application: the room, subfloor, moisture risk, children, pets, expected traffic, likelihood of spills, desired appearance and budget.
That information allows us to recommend a product that makes sense for the customer’s home rather than simply selling the same laminate to everyone.
With quality 8mm AC4 products, premium 12mm AC5 ranges, water-resistant options and different designs available, there is a laminate floor for most dry residential living areas and budgets.
Most importantly, the flooring needs to be installed over a suitable, level and sufficiently dry subfloor.
