Why Does Laminate Flooring Creak?
Why does laminate flooring creak when you walk across it? In our experience, the most common cause is movement between the laminate boards and the subfloor underneath.
At Laminate Floor World, we have installed, inspected and repaired laminate flooring for more than 20 years. During that time, we have uplifted many floors because customers complained about creaking, squeaking or bouncing.
What we find underneath the floor is often more important than what you can see from above.
Uneven subfloors, insufficient expansion gaps, moisture and damaged locking systems can all contribute to the problem. Furthermore, modern water-resistant laminate flooring can behave differently from older laminate products.
In this guide, we explain what we actually find when investigating noisy laminate floors and how we rectify the problem.
What Causes Laminate Flooring to Creak?
One of the most common causes we find is an uneven subfloor.
Laminate is a floating floor. Therefore, the boards need a firm and sufficiently level surface underneath them. When there are dips or waves in the subfloor, sections of the laminate can move vertically as you walk across them.
You may feel the floor bouncing slightly under your feet. At the same time, you may hear creaking around the joints.
That movement places repeated pressure on the click-lock system.
For this reason, proper laminate flooring installation starts with assessing the condition of the subfloor rather than simply laying boards over the existing surface.
Modern Water-Resistant Laminate Can Be Less Forgiving
We have noticed something particularly important with the newer generation of water-resistant laminate flooring.
These products often have tight locking systems. The joints help prevent topical water from easily penetrating between the boards.
However, that tight connection means the subfloor preparation becomes extremely important.
If the floor underneath has dips, the laminate can move every time somebody walks over that section. The joints then move against each other and may begin to creak.
Over time, continuous movement and friction can weaken the locking system.
This is one reason we strongly recommend following the specific subfloor requirements of the laminate manufacturer or supplier.
Water-resistant laminate also should not be confused with a waterproof flooring installation. We discuss this distinction further in our laminate floor guide.
A Hairline Gap Can Affect Water Resistance
The condition of the locking system matters for another reason.
A water-resistant laminate relies partly on correctly connected joints. If movement eventually causes a joint to open, even a very small gap can create an entry point for water.
Therefore, a floor that continually moves should not simply be ignored because the creaking is tolerable.
The noise may be warning you that something underneath the floor needs attention.
An Uneven Subfloor Does Not Always Look Uneven
One of the biggest misconceptions we encounter is that a subfloor must be level because it looks level.
Unfortunately, visual inspection alone is not enough.
We regularly assess floors that appear acceptable from standing height. However, when we test them properly, we find dips, waves and slopes.
Our teams use a laser during assessments. The laser helps us identify changes across the floor that may not be obvious to the eye.
We may also place underlay and several laminate panels over a questionable section. This allows us to demonstrate the movement to the customer before installation continues.
“My Previous Laminate Lasted 20 Years Without Screeding”
We hear this argument regularly.
A homeowner may have an older 8mm laminate floor that has been installed for 15 or 20 years. Therefore, they understandably question why the new floor requires additional subfloor preparation.
However, the fact that an older laminate performed successfully does not automatically mean the same subfloor meets the requirements of a modern product.
Laminate products, locking systems and water-resistance technologies have changed.
For example, many modern 12mm water-resistant products use very tight locking systems. As a result, we follow the current manufacturer’s or supplier’s installation requirements rather than assuming that conditions suitable for an old floor will suit the replacement.

A Real 12mm Laminate Flooring Creaking Call-Out
We recently dealt with a good example of this problem.
The installation involved a 12mm laminate with 72-hour topical water resistance. After installation, the customer complained that the floor was creaking badly throughout the house.
We first tested for moisture. The moisture readings were zero, so moisture did not appear to be causing the problem.
We then sent another installation team to investigate and carry out the repair.
Once the laminate was uplifted, we found that the subfloor was uneven.
When we questioned the original installation team, they explained that the previous floor had been an 8mm laminate. It had reportedly been installed for more than 20 years without problems. The customer had therefore refused the recommended screeding.
Unfortunately, within a few weeks of installing the new laminate, the creaking became noticeable.
This case demonstrates why we cannot use the performance of an old floor as the only test of whether a subfloor is suitable for a new laminate.
Why Screeding Can Be Necessary Before Laminate Installation
When we find unacceptable dips or uneven sections, we recommend correcting the subfloor before installing the laminate.
During an assessment, we explain the problem to the customer and demonstrate the movement where possible. We also explain the installation requirements supplied for the flooring product.
This isn’t simply about making the floor look better.
The objective is to give the floating laminate a stable foundation and protect the locking system from unnecessary movement.
In addition, we depend on our flooring suppliers for product warranties. If an installation does not meet the required subfloor conditions, warranty claims may be rejected.
What If a Customer Refuses Screeding?
Occasionally, a customer chooses to proceed without the subfloor preparation we have recommended.
In these circumstances, we require a refusal-to-screed waiver. The document records that we advised the customer about the condition of the subfloor and the possible consequences of proceeding.
It also confirms that we cannot accept responsibility for problems caused by the rejected preparation work.

Can Underlay Cause Laminate Flooring to Creak?
Underlay is an important part of a floating laminate installation.
Installing laminate without the required underlay can contribute to noise and other problems.
However, in our experience, simply changing between standard foam underlay and a suitable rubber underlay does not normally solve creaking caused by an uneven subfloor.
Underlay should not be treated as a substitute for levelling.
If there is a significant dip underneath the floor, the laminate can still move when somebody walks over it.
Can Missing Expansion Gaps Cause Creaking?
Yes. Expansion gaps are another area we check when investigating a noisy laminate floor.
Laminate is a floating installation and needs space to expand and contract.
If the flooring has been installed tightly against walls or other fixed points, the boards have nowhere to move as the floor expands.
Pressure then transfers through the floor from one board to another. This creates a domino effect across the installation.
As the pressure increases, the possibility of creaking, peaking and lifting also increases.
Why Expansion Profiles Matter in Large Areas
We have had many customers ask us not to install expansion strips because they prefer the appearance of one continuous floor.
We understand the reason. However, removing a necessary expansion profile for appearance can create a much larger problem later.
Long continuous runs are particularly important. In our experience, runs exceeding approximately 15 metres without the required expansion break can significantly increase the risk of the floor lifting.
However, exact expansion requirements vary between flooring products. Therefore, we follow the installation instructions for the particular laminate being fitted.
Expansion profiles are not simply decorative accessories. When required, they form part of the installation system.
Can Moisture Under Laminate Cause Creaking?
Yes. Uneven subfloors are not the only problem we have discovered underneath creaking floors.
We have also uplifted noisy or lifting laminate and found a wet subfloor underneath.
Before installation, we use a Caisson moisture meter to assess the subfloor for moisture concerns. We also use moisture testing when investigating floors that have started lifting.
However, instruments are only part of the assessment.
We also look for physical warning signs. These can include flaking paint near walls, mould behind skirtings and swelling around laminate joints.
Water-Resistant Laminate Can Hide a Leak for Longer
This is something homeowners often don’t expect.
When water gets underneath laminate, visible damage may not appear immediately.
With a 72-hour water-resistant laminate, the surface and joints may resist topical water for longer. However, that does not make the entire installed floor waterproof.
If water enters from underneath because of a leaking pipe or another source, it can become trapped between the laminate, underlay and subfloor.
In our experience, by the time visible peaking or swelling appears at the joints, the water may already have travelled considerably further underneath the floor.
Heat can contribute to the moisture remaining trapped because evaporation is restricted underneath the installed boards.
Furthermore, walking across the floor applies pressure. This can help disperse trapped water into surrounding areas underneath the installation.
For this reason, visible damage in one section does not necessarily show the full extent of the moisture underneath.
Does a New Laminate Floor Need Time to Settle?
No. We do not consider significant creaking or bouncing on the day of installation to be something that should simply be left to “settle”.
If a newly installed floor is visibly moving or noticeably creaking, we investigate the cause.
In our experience, a floor moving because of an uneven subfloor does not correct itself with time. Instead, repeated movement can make the problem worse.
The locking systems continually rub and flex as people walk over the affected area.
Eventually, that friction can weaken or damage the joints.
Can Creaking Laminate Flooring Be Repaired?
Yes, in many cases it can. However, the correct repair depends on what is causing the noise and whether the locking system has already suffered damage.
We first check the level of the subfloor and the expansion gaps around the perimeter.
These are two critical parts of a floating laminate installation. If either is incorrect, the entire installation can be compromised.
If necessary, we uplift the affected flooring so we can inspect the subfloor and the click-lock edges properly.
What If the Locking System Is Broken?
If the locking system has completely broken, the affected laminate panels need replacement.
A broken click-lock edge cannot be restored simply by adding lubricant and reinstalling the board.
This is another reason not to ignore excessive movement for months or years.
A problem that could initially involve subfloor correction may eventually require replacement flooring as well.
What If the Locking System Is Still Intact?
If the locking system remains intact, the boards may be reusable once the underlying cause has been corrected.
In our repair work, we use a suitable lubricant on the joints before reinstalling intact boards. We have successfully used this method after addressing the cause of the movement.
The important point is that lubrication does not replace proper subfloor preparation.
If the laminate continues bouncing over a dip, lubricating the joints alone does not remove the underlying movement.
Can Wax or Raw Linseed Oil Stop Laminate Creaking?
We have also dealt with joint-related creaking where lubrication helped.
On two occasions, we used wax or raw linseed oil at the joints and the creaking was resolved.
However, we would not recommend assuming that every noisy floor simply needs oil or wax.
First identify why the floor is making noise.
If the subfloor is uneven, the expansion gaps are incorrect, moisture is present or the locking system is damaged, those problems need attention.
Also check the flooring manufacturer’s care and warranty requirements before applying any product to laminate joints.
What Should You Do If Your Laminate Floor Is Creaking?
Start with the basics.
Check the level of the subfloor and check the expansion gaps.
Those are two of the first things we investigate on a creaking or bouncing laminate floor.
Next, look for signs of moisture. Swollen joints, lifting boards, mould behind skirtings or flaking paint may indicate that something more serious is happening underneath the installation.
Don’t assume that a new floor simply needs several weeks to settle.
Likewise, don’t start pouring lubricants or cleaning products into the joints without understanding what is causing the noise.
If you’re unsure, an experienced installer can assess the floor before repeated movement causes further damage.
How to Reduce the Risk Before Installation
The best time to prevent creaking is before the first row of laminate is installed.
First, assess the subfloor properly. Next, correct unacceptable unevenness. Then install the correct underlay and maintain the required expansion gaps and profiles.
Most importantly, follow the installation specifications for the laminate product you have purchased.

Frequently Asked Questions About Creaking Laminate Flooring
Why does my laminate flooring creak when I walk on it?
In our experience, one of the most common causes is movement over an uneven subfloor. As the boards flex, the locking joints can rub against each other and produce a creaking sound.
Will laminate flooring creaking go away on its own?
If the noise comes from excessive movement or an uneven subfloor, we would not expect it to disappear simply by waiting. Continued movement may place additional stress on the locking system.
Does laminate flooring need time to settle after installation?
A newly installed floor should not have significant bouncing or persistent creaking that is simply dismissed as settling. If there is obvious movement on installation day, we recommend investigating the cause.
Can an uneven floor damage laminate?
Yes. Repeated movement can place pressure on the locking system. Over time, friction and flexing may weaken or break the click-lock edges.
Can underlay fix an uneven subfloor?
No. Underlay performs an important function, but it should not be used as a replacement for proper subfloor preparation where levelling is required.
Can water-resistant laminate still suffer moisture damage?
Yes. Water resistance normally relates to specific product testing and conditions. It does not mean that water cannot enter underneath an installed floating floor from a leak or another moisture source.
Should I remove expansion strips for a seamless appearance?
Not when the flooring manufacturer or installation conditions require them. Expansion profiles allow sections of the floor to move correctly and can help prevent pressure, lifting and other problems.
Does creaking mean I need to replace the whole laminate floor?
Not necessarily. If the boards and locking systems remain intact, it may be possible to correct the underlying installation problem and reinstall usable boards. However, panels with broken locking systems normally require replacement.

Laminate flooring can perform extremely well when the product, subfloor and installation work together correctly.
However, a high-quality board cannot compensate for every installation problem underneath it.
After more than 20 years of working with laminated floors, one lesson remains consistent: the condition of the subfloor matters.
